Forever The Man in Black

The low beeping of the hospital machine could be faintly heard. Eventually, off in the far distance, an alarm alerted nurses and doctors to his darkened room, as the patient closed his eyes in deep sleep.

Meanwhile, a raven awakes from slumber, to the beeping of a trash truck reversing.  It blinks its eyes, first in confusion, and then fully alert, stretching its wings wide, in wonder. What a glorious day to soar high. A breeze rumples the newspaper on a driveway, headlined with:

“Johnny Cash Dead at 71”

The raven begins its journey, gliding over lawns and trees in the bright sunshine. It’s destination:  Every where.  He will forever be the man in black, “traveling every road in this here land.”

Footnote from Wikipedia:  Johnny Cash wore ‘black’ on behalf of the poor and hungry, on behalf of “the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,” and on behalf of those who have been betrayed by age or drugs.[74] “And,” Cash added, “with the Vietnam War as painful in my mind as it was in most other Americans, I wore it ‘in mournin’ for the lives that could have been’ … Apart from the Vietnam War being over, I don’t see much reason to change my position … The old are still neglected, the poor are still poor, the young are still dying before their time, and we’re not making many moves to make things right. There’s still plenty of darkness to carry off.”[74]

    1. Oddly, I had no idea it was really going to become a tribute – it DID just kind of slide or work it’s way into that. I had him playing on spotify and looking at the photo. Man in black, black bird…hmmm. (and thank you)
