Not having what you want, wanting what you’ve got

I’ve never done one of WordPress’ Daily Prompts.  I’ve been looking at them recently, and today’s struck me as interesting.

Today’s prompt stated to take a line from a song, and use it as a title for a blog post.  I love SHERYL CROW.  Soak up the sun, is a fantastic, fun song.  and my favorite line:

It’s not having what you want
It’s wanting what you’ve got

Sheryl Crow - Soak Up the SunThis strikes me as the whole, “grass-is-greener” on the other side.  You can desire and aspire for things that are always beyond your reach, and be miserable because you don’t have those things.  Or you can be grateful for the things you already have.  There is so much to be grateful for and if you are always looking to the other side, you’re gonna miss out on happiness.

I like a lot of Crow’s lyrics.  In this song, she’s grateful for the sun.  Literally and figuratively speaking.  She’s got some sunshine and going to soak it up.  She’s not going to blame others for whatever.  She’s gonna look up.

Being Positive vs. Negative.  Looking up, not looking down.  I think she’s got it right.  I try to always live my life this way.

Especially with all the cloudy days, and the recent storm we’re in… I’m going to soak up the sun.  And want what I got.  And focus on things that are within our reach.  I choose to be happy.

Whenever I hear that song, I think that is what Ms. Crow is saying.  And I agree.  Enjoy the things you have while you still got ’em.
